Congressman Louis Stokes Remembered During Memoir Release Event, October 13
ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½±â€™s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (1801 Euclid Ave.) will host a discussion of the legacy of U.S. Congressman Louis Stokes, Thursday, October 13 at 5 p.m. The lecture corresponds with the publication of Stokes’ memoir, The Gentleman from Ohio.
Congressman Stokes, a 1953 graduate of C|M|LAW, passed away in August 2015 at the age of 90. A 15-term Congressman representing Cleveland’s East Side, Stokes was the first black congressman in Ohio and headed the Congressional Black Caucus. The event will feature discussion of Terry v. Ohio, the landmark United States Supreme Court case, argued by Stokes, which clarified indivuduals' Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures.
Congressman Stokes’ daughter Lori Stokes, co-anchor of Eyewitness News This Morning on WABC-TV in New York City, and his grandson Brett Hammond, a prosecutor in the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office, will be speak at the program. The panel of speakers also includes David Chanoff, a prominent non-fiction writer and the co-author of The Gentleman from Ohio.
The 90-minute program is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception and book signing. Preregistration is not required.
