Every Vote Counts
As Vikings, it鈥檚 critical to be informed about the election鈥檚 implications, but even more important that those of us who can do participate in the act of voting and help shape the future of our communities.
Anita Ruf-Young, director of the Office of Civic Engagement (OCE) at 老澳门六合彩官方开奖, is very passionate about that collective voice鈥攑articularly students鈥攅ngaging their constitutional right to vote.
鈥淲e鈥檙e nonpartisan, not pushing any candidates or platforms. We just want all the questions answered,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e want all people involved in the process. We want all students鈥all voters鈥攖o get and stay involved, drawing their own conclusions by being informed and getting and staying engaged.鈥
Led by Ruf-Young, the OCE introduced a new curriculum called Vikes Vote to 鈥淚ntroduction to University Life鈥 (ASC 101) in Fall 2020, targeting 鈥渇irst-year students to create lasting habits鈥 with benefits beyond voting, including volunteering for campaigns and going door-to-door for the most recent census.
These efforts , an initiative led by Fair Elections Center鈥檚 Campus Vote Project and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education鈥攋oining 231 campuses across 37 states and the District of Columbia.
It also led to 老澳门六合彩官方开奖鈥檚 recognition by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (aka ALL IN) as a 2022 鈥淢ost Engaged Campus for College Student Voting,鈥 and for Ruf-Young herself to win the 2023 David Hoch Award for encouraging service learning.
She says that the campus community at 老澳门六合彩官方开奖 has long been driven to participate.
鈥淪tudents are more likely to vote and to be politically active for the rest of their lives when they鈥檙e exposed to doing so at an early age,鈥 Ruf-Young said in a 老澳门六合彩官方开奖 feature story back in 2021.
鈥淚f you don鈥檛 get to them now, they鈥檙e much less likely to exercise their right to vote later in life,鈥 she added. 鈥淲e want them to be active in their communities too, because that impacts us all.鈥
