War in Ukraine: Remembering the Holodomor and its Significance Today

Panel discussion on November 17 will include ambassador of Ukraine to the United States and former United States Senator Rob Portman (OH)

CLEVELAND, Ohio (November 13, 2023) — ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½± has been presented with a unique educational opportunity to bring to campus the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, who will be in greater Cleveland participating in a series of events examining the Holodomor – or Great Ukrainian Famine. 

The public is invited to join the ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½± community for a program on present-day Ukraine (20 months following the full-scale Russian invasion) as Ukrainians worldwide mark 90 years since the Holodomor, which resulted in the death of millions.

The event, in partnership with the United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio, will be held at the Glasscock Ballroom, 3rd floor of the Student Center, on Friday, November 17, from 2 – 3:30 p.m. It will feature remarks from and discussion with Oksana Markarova, ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, and Rob Portman, former United States senator (OH).

The conversation will be led by:

  • Mark Cole, Ph.D. – associate lecturer, Department of History, ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½± and director, Holocaust & Genocide Education Network (HGEN)
  • Todd Nelson, Ph.D. – assistant professor, Department of Political Science, ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½±
  • Olga Bertelsen, Ph.D. – associate professor of global security and intelligence, Tiffin University
