MY MAJORS- advising report

WELCOME TO MY MAJORS AT CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY

The Advising Report is a tool that advisors can add to their advising toolbox. This tool canbe used to streamline advising apppointments, improve advisor/student relationships earlier on, shape conversation about careers and majors, etc.  The MyMajors Assessment reveals information such as student enjoyment, motivation, previous academic performance, extra-ciricular activites, and many other areas that were not visible to advisors prior to the MyMajors Assessment. 

This is a tool that should be used throughout the entire time a student is at ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½± and can me taken multiple times. There interests may change throughout their academic journey.

The advising report SECTIONS and how to use EACH in an advising appointment

It is recommended that advisors use the advising report in their advising sessions and ask the student open-ended questions to facilitate meaningful conversations in the advising appointment. 

  1. Title Page
    1. This page provides a brief overview of MyMajors
       
  2. How were My Majors calculated?
    1. This page explains how My Majors determines majors the student might be interested in.
       
  3. Summary Report
    1. This page provides a summary of the answers you provide when the student completes the assessment.
    2. Tips and Reccommendations:
      1. Does the student's intended major match what they are currently declared in? Does it match any of their Top 10 majors?
      2. What are the concerns that the student listed that my hinder their ability to complete their degree? Why did they choose this? What resources can the student benefit from? 
         
  4. My Top Recommended Majors
    1. ​ This page lists the Top 10 majors the student received the highest scores in based on the assessment.
    2. Tips and Reccommendations
      1. Are all the majors score values close together or far apart? Are the top five higher than the lower five? Analyze the score distribution.
      2. It is best to talk about all of them or narrow the conversation to three majors?
      3. Is there anything that surprised the student? Are there any majors that surprised the student?
      4. Are there majors on the Top 10 list the student would like to eliminate?
      5. Refer to the 'My Recommended Majors' section to learn more about careers and about the major in greater detail.

    1. This page provides a detailed breakdown of each of the Top 10 majors with additional information, including (1) Description, (2) What skills are developed in this major?, (3) What careers can this major prepare you for? Students can click on each major and then go to the ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½± Catalog. 
    2. Tips and Reccommendations
      1. Review the student's top three majors in more detail. 
      2. Have them review the skills and careers section. 
      3. Is there anything in this section that surprised you or stood out?
      4. Are there careers that you did not think about before and now have questions about them?
         
  6. My Academic Profile
    1. ​This page provides a summary of what students entered in the Assessment.
    2. Tips and Reccommendations
      1. Review the student's AP courses and GPA. Check to see if they have the appropriate credit at ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½±.
      2. How many years of foreign language did the student take? Have they thought about study abroad in that country?
         
  7. My Interests and Personality
    1. ​ This page provides a summary of what students enjoy in and out of the classroom. 
    2. Tips and Reccommendations
      1. What are the student's extra-curricular activities? Are there clubs, minors, faculty, or resources in the the area that they can be connected to?
      2. Do you share similar interets?
      3. I see that you indicated that you like 'INSERT ACTIVITY" can you tell me more about it? 
         
  8. Course Matrix
    1. ​This page is a visual summary of what the student's interests and grades divided into 4 areas (1)Low Interest, High Grades, (2) High Interest , High Grades, (3) Low Interest, Low Grades (4) High Interest, Low Grades.
    2. Tips and Reccommendations
      1. This is a great tool that helps facilitate conversations with student interests and performance visually.
        1. Low-Interest, High Grades
          1. Does the student have a lot of classes in this section? Why? Is the student in a major that is in this section? if so, are they in a major that they really are interested in pursuing? What is their motivation and reason for being in their major?
          2. If the student asks to be placed in classes in future semesters, but they have a low interest, is this wise?
        2. High Interest, High Grades
          1. Is the student in a major that is in this section? If not, why not? Why did they choose their major?
          2. These could be classes the student takes for a major, minor or general elective. Is there a club or faculty member doing research in an area that the student might have an interest in? 
          3. Does the information in this section reaffirm or question the students current major selection? For example, does a Pre-med student have BIO and CHEM classes in this section? If not, then they may struggle with this major.
        3. Low Interest, Low Grades
          1. These are classes that the student may want to avoid taking, if possible. 
          2. Is the student in a major that has subjects or content in this area? If so, are they in the right major?
        4. High Interest, Low Grades
          1. These are class that the student may be interested in, but has historically done poorly in.
          2. Is the student in a major that has subjects or content in this area? For example, is there a student pursuing pre-med and has BIO and CHEM in this area. Is this major right for them? What services can they benefit from in order to be successful? What is their plan to be successful? Are there other majors to consider?
             
  9. Course Grades and Enjoyment
    1. ​This page is a detailed summary of the student's answers to the grades and enjoyment section of the assessment.
    2. Tips and Reccommendations
      1. This is a great tool that helps facilitate conversations with student to explain why items in the matrix are in the various parts of the quadrant. 
      2. Did a student put 'No preference' in the enjoyment section for most of the areas?  Do they feel the results are accurate ?If so, did they take it seriously?
      3. What are courses that they loved or didn't like? What did they love or didn't like about the course?
  10. My Values & Preferences
    1. This page is a detailed summary of the student's answers to the values and preferences section of the assessment.
    2. Tips and Reccommendations
      1. Did a student put 'No preference' in the student selection section for most of the areas?  Do they feel the results are accurate ?If so, did they take it seriously?
      2. What are their responses to preferences and values?
      3. Do their preferences allign with what their career goals?
