Berkman - Jackson Fellows Program

The Berkman/Jackson Fellows in Urban Health program, named after ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½± leaders Ronald Berkman, Ph.D., and Dr. Edgar B. Jackson, Jr., supports students from Cleveland and nearby suburbs who are on nontraditional paths to medical school. This program offers help with science courses, MCAT prep, mentorship, and an urban health curriculum to make students stronger candidates for our early assurance tracks or a direct path to medical school. 

 

Admission and Program Information

To join our program, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:

• A GPA around 3.0 or higher

• 60+ credit hours completed, including:

• General Biology with labs (courses 200/202)

• General Chemistry with labs (courses 261/262)

• You can apply while taking these courses, but they must be finished before you start the program.

• Additional Requirements for Post-Baccalaureate Students:

• A completed college degree

• Acceptance to ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹Ù·½¿ª½±

  3. Send copies of ALL unofficial transcripts to 4urbanhealth@csuohio.edu.

When sending unofficial transcripts, attach ALL transcripts to one email. Include student's last name, first initial and "Unofficial transcript(s)" in the subject line. 

The course curriculum aligns with the early assurance curriculum. Students will be required to take the following pre-requisite courses: 

  • Two semesters of Organic Chemistry with One Lab
  • Two semesters of Physics and Labs
  • Two semesters of Biology 
  • One semester of Biochemistry

 

MCAT Prep: 

  • HSC 427 -Professional Development I (1 credits) ( 1st year Fall) 
  • HSC 429 - Professional Development II (1 credits) (1st year Spring)

Urban Health Seminar: 

  • HSC 434/534 Urban Health I (1 credit) (1st year Fall)
  • HSC 461/561 Urban Health II (1 credit) (1st year Spring)
  • HSC 463/563 Urban Health III (3 credits) (2nd year Fall)
  • HSC 465/565 Urban Health IV (3 credits) (2nd year Spring)

Clinical Science Courses:

  • HSC 422 or 520 Physiology for the Clinical Sciences (4 credits) (2nd year)
  • HSC 475/575 Human Gross Anatomy (3 credits) (2nd year) AND
  • HSC 457/557 Human Gross Anatomy Lab (3 credit dissection lab) 

Total Credits: 18-20 credit hours 


  • Statistics and Research Methods: STA 147 or 347; PSY 217 and 317; PSY 312

 

  • Upper Division Biology courses: Immunology BIO 412/413 or 512/513; Histology BIO 418/419 or 518/519; Genetics BIO 310/311, Cell Biology BIO 308/309

 

  • Upper Division Chemistry courses: Medicinal Chemistry I and II CHM 351/352
